Historical Note

The National Organization for Women (NOW), San Diego Chapter, was formed in 1970 to lobby for the enforcement of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and works toward the elimination of discrimination against women in job and educational opportunities as well as to advocate for safe reproductive access, promoting diversity, marriage equality and to education the public on issues such as abortion, sexual assault, employment discrimination, and the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA).

Biographical Note

Patricia Hrycyszyn, as the 1979 chapter president of NOW San Diego, was highly involved in supporting and rallying for the ratification of the ERA. San Diego County NOW and the League of Women Voters established an active drive for the ratification of the ERA by opening an ERA resource center. The fight for the ERA continued with writing letters to newspapers and politicians, rallies, workshops, and fund raising events. Patricia utilized her presidency to work effectively and actively towards ratifying the ERA by urging influential politicians to recognize the magnitude and significance of the ERA. After her presidency and the unsuccessful conclusion to ratify the ERA in 1982, Patricia continued to reflect on the ERA through newsletters addressed to the chapter in which she reframed the issue by questioning and highlighting the problems and shortcomings of the ratification deadline. Patricia used her leadership and dedicated herself to further advance and make recognizable the efforts of the NOW San Diego Chapter in advocating for women to gain equality and to demand rights based on women’s humanity.
